Yiangou Educational Hall | Methodology
Teaching English as a foreign language is considered to be a complex process which demands endless attempts. An English teacher needs to be fully organized and extremely inspired so as to empower learners to use the language effectively under any circumstances. To achieve this, we focus on the philosophy that the EFL curriculum should be based on principles drawn from recent research in cognitive sciences, psychology, linguistics, philosophy and neurology. Thys, we design our lessons having in mind the following:
Students should:
- Master linguistic and cultural knowledge
- Gain positive feelings about the English language
- Gain confidence as a user of the English language
- Learn how to use it, be ready to meet future learning challenges
- Use language in context and practise it effectively
Throughout the ten years that students are expected to attend classes of various levels (Pre Junior I & II, A and B Junior, A, B, C and D Senior, Proficiency and IGCSE) emphasis is given on the following aims and principles:
- Development of communication skills (integration of listening, speaking, reading and writing)
- Autonomous learning
- Critical thinking
- Learner centered teaching
- Focus on fluency and accuracy (through the use of communicative activities such as information gap activities, role-plays, problem solving activities and games)
Upon completion of their studies our students:
- Are able to communicate efficiently in various situations
- Acquire a global understanding of foreign cultures
- Are exposed to a variety of authentic materials
- Are provided with opportunities for entertainment and literary pieces (songs, puzzles, games, theatre)
- Learn to perform in the four major writing styles: narrative, descriptive, expository and argumentative
- Learn how to meet their social, academic and professional needs
- Relate the language to themselves and their interests
The continuous process of assessment is as vital as the aforementioned language aims. The goal of assessment is to improve the quality of learning and teaching. That is why based on the students' attitude to the English language, we try to assess their effort to participate in class and communicate effectively. The use of the language should be accurate and creative. Another serious issue that we take into account is the quality of our tests. We strongly believe that tests must be valid and reliable. Surely, students are also evaluated by their work throughout the year (portfolios & homework).
Finally, we would like to emphasize the fact that the books we use meet the requirements of the European Framework. In addition, we provide the best possible environment in order to encourage our students to get themselves into the process of learning without getting bored or complaining about homework. The use of the interactive boards and tablets make miracles concerning these issues.
